work with words

so i finally broke down and had to purchase a few calligraphy pens for my continuing flourish research and out of pages and pages of wordplay accentuated with wild unabashed flourishes, these are the only things that i was actually proud of … it seems to be all about getting the feel of the pen and then the movement of it all… much work to be done and excited to eventually graduate to the Pilot Parallel Pens my expert calligrapher aunt recommended… stay tuned!

along with making constant collages, i have been a bit obsessed with studying various types of calligraphic flourishes… without the proper pen to make some of the magic happen and zero training my effots are slightly clumsy but somehow i plan on perfecting some more precise flourish action. the last image is my initials in the style of Marco Antonio Rossi who was an Italian calligrapher who lived at the end of the 16th century.

when working out my latest mini-collages in the sketchbook, lacing men’s fashion silhouettes with flowers, grass, and whatnot, they seemed to be asking for something more and what could complete them better that some extravagant flourish action…
