,p>tools, pins, and petals litter the floor of my studio
thrown carelessly about by my glue gun-burned hands
as my latest project takes shape, a fake floral monstrosity
i’m bringing to life for The End of Nature show
opening April 11 at the Warehouse Gallery
detritus-floral
sun-drenched stampy
my gigantic houseplant stampy is a
constant source of inspiration
as he takes up a fair amount of space
in my studio, just basking in the tropical
greenhouse effect of the morning sun
streaming through my windows…
i have pure religious awe for this plant
so prehistoric in his many patterned leaves
lit up by the first light of the day
later in the middle of the night,
i found warmth in the warm orange glow
of this magnificent silk tulip on my floor…
light through plants hypnotizes me
flora-morphus #3: daffodilicious
in my preeteen years, my friend and i
right out in the broad suburban daylight
would ransack the neighborhood’s gardens
and stuff our shirts and pockets with daffodils
only a few from each yard but they were everywhere!
somehow we were never apprehended in our raids
our bizarre crimes somehow went unnoticed,
we horded those sunny flowers and basked in their glow…
last (host) stand
with a new show quickly approaching
my mind is all abuzz with ideas
developing into an obsession of images
sketched over and over on any available surface
so it was not in my sketchbook that
my most successful/expressive sketch appeared
but on my reservation pad at work,
right under Debbie, party of two…
working on a piece for the upcoming show
The End of Nature, at the Warehouse next month
but if nature is going down, it won’t be without a fight!
my work represents nature’s last stand
embodied as a lumbering floral monstrosity
wobbling towards the viewer on unsteady legs
slightly menacing and utterly ridiculous
