on a trip to Oregon this past week i was taken to Multnomah Falls along the Columbia River Gorge and my dry outer layers of consciousness were blasted away by the beauty and relentless rush of this awesome waterfall… i have never felt so close to the raw power of nature thundering before me, the water hitting rock hitting water was like a thousand strikes of lightning fighting to reach the ground first, or the very fabric of reality ripping apart before your eyes/ears! the constant wall of mist billowing out from the watery source saturated everything in its path and all exposed surfaces sprouted an abundance of green like i have never seen before, moss owned everything that wasn’t water, the trees were soggily draped with moss and fern that reached down as if to slurp me up into their moist squishy world… i would have let it take me away if i wasn’t spending an amazing afternoon with two of my best friends!!

SO last weekend was the magical Open Studios here @ 52 O Street and it was a blast opening my studio up, meeting so many fun people, seeing all of my amazing family/friends, and just meeting other new artists in my own building…

I chose this year’s Open Studios to debut my new series of BANNERS; layers upon layers of silk flower petals adorn these flags, forming color patterns and swirling shapes that make bold statements to display with pride! Stay tuned for the next batch appearing soon…

***ARTOMATIC UPDATE*** After taking a year off ARTOMATIC is back! For one whole month, hundreds of artists take over a soon-to-be-demolished building in Crystal City.  I just picked out my space this morning, a great spot across from the windows on the 8th Floor!  Lots more info to come including previews of the new work I’ll be showing.  The dates are May 18th-June 23rd, more info here

so i finally broke down and had to purchase a few calligraphy pens for my continuing flourish research and out of pages and pages of wordplay accentuated with wild unabashed flourishes, these are the only things that i was actually proud of … it seems to be all about getting the feel of the pen and then the movement of it all… much work to be done and excited to eventually graduate to the Pilot Parallel Pens my expert calligrapher aunt recommended… stay tuned!

along with making constant collages, i have been a bit obsessed with studying various types of calligraphic flourishes… without the proper pen to make some of the magic happen and zero training my effots are slightly clumsy but somehow i plan on perfecting some more precise flourish action. the last image is my initials in the style of Marco Antonio Rossi who was an Italian calligrapher who lived at the end of the 16th century.

when working out my latest mini-collages in the sketchbook, lacing men’s fashion silhouettes with flowers, grass, and whatnot, they seemed to be asking for something more and what could complete them better that some extravagant flourish action…
